Constituent Services Outreach
Councilmember Brown provided service to the residents across the 8 Wards of the District.
- In October 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau and Council Chairman Vincent Gray named Councilmember Brown the official DC Council Liaison for the 2010 Census count. The Census Bureau recognized Councilmember Brown for his outstanding work in increasing the District’s count rate from 66% in 2000 to over 71% in 2010.
- Councilmember Brown’s election to chair of the Metropolitan Development Policy Committee (MDPC) of the Metropolitan Council of Governments (COG) Board of Directors in January 2010 provided new vision and creative oversight on regional population growth, economic development and land use issues affecting the Washington – Maryland – Virginia Metropolitan area.
- During Thanksgiving week, Councilmember Brown visited numerous sites and families across the District to distribute turkeys with the trimmings to District residents, including over 500 turkeys and other food items at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ward 1 and at a Ward 6 public housing complex. The Councilmember and his staff volunteered for the Food & Friends, Inc. Food Drive that prepared and delivered 3,000 Thanksgiving meals to residents living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life challenging illnesses. Seventy turkeys and gift cards were donated to Hope House DC, Mary’s Center, and So Others Might Eat (SOME).
- Chew and Chat Meetings – Councilmember Brown hosted “living room chats” across the city to discuss his legislative agenda and to share his vision on the direction of the city during these difficult and economically challenging times. He listened and commented on the views, opinions, ideas, and recommendation of residents on what they believe our city is doing right and what it is doing wrong. He also attended numerous neighborhood and civic groups and ANC representatives meetings.
- Alonte Sutton – Councilmember Brown and the Office of the Secretary of the Council orchestrated a candlelight prayer vigil to honor the life of Council intern, Alonte Sutton, who was brutally murdered in May 2010. In the summer of 2009, Alonte was selected to participate in the Council’s Youth Internship Program, administered by the Council’s Office of Youth Programs. He was assigned to work in the Office of Councilmember Brown, where he won the affection and hearts of the entire staff. He was an affable young man with a quiet, respectful demeanor.
- Cakes for “Mother’s Day” – The Councilmember provided 30 “Mother’s Day Cakes” to senior and wellness center throughout the 8 Wards.
- Diversity Outreach – With the addition of Diversity Outreach Specialist Alma Molina, Councilmember Brown has increased his ability to interact with the Latino, Ethiopian, Asian, Caribbean/African, and other international communities and organizations.
