Statehood Initiative

Councilmember Brown was named the first chair of a Special Committee on Statehood and Self-Determination in March 2009. This special committee’s mission was to help advance the District’s effort to achieve the goal of statehood. As part of the effort the Committee:

• Coordinated with advocates, community activists and non-profits to develop a comprehensive strategy to achieve full democracy and statehood for the District of Columbia.

• Conducted hearings and public oversight roundtables on various topics related to DC Statehood.

• Outreached to state legislators through the National Conference of State Legislatures, and other organizations, to educate the states on the plight of DC and obtain their support for DC statehood

• Released a final report on the accomplishments of the Special Committee.

• In March 2010 the chairmanship of the Special Committee was transferred to Councilmember Yvette Alexander, Ward 7, pursuant to the Council’s decision.
