Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Interns
This Summer Councilmember Brown sponsored three SYEP interns. Typically, the interns rotate among different staff assignments, however, this year Councilmember Brown developed a more comprehensive program that was headed by Intern Supervisor, Jordan Chisolm.
- The Program provided the interns with informative Professional Development Workshops on Government and the Legislative Branch, Position/Policy Research and Writing, Public Speaking, Job Readiness, Leadership Training, and Higher Education.
- Established a Youth Council and held weekly meetings where participants discussed community events in their respective Wards, as well as national and local issues concerning the District of Columbia.
- Facilitated outings to local and national landmarks such as The White House, The Supreme Court, and the Smithsonian Institution.
- Each SYEP program participant submitted a formal legislative paper in the form of a memorandum to Councilmember Brown. This project allowed program participants to model the work of full-time Council staff, and learn the professionalism necessary to deliver a thorough work product.
- The interns provided background work and logistical assistance for a large Job Fair with over 50 employers and more than 400 participants.
